How AI systems find local businesses

When a customer asks an AI system "Who should I hire for plumbing in Charlotte?" the system:

  1. Searches the web for relevant pages about plumbing services in Charlotte.
  2. Evaluates source quality by checking entity clarity, authority, and consistency.
  3. Extracts facts from the pages it finds (business name, address, phone, service area).

ChatGPT Search mechanics

ChatGPT Search works by:

  • Crawling the web for pages about the user's query.
  • Ranking by authority using signals like domain age, backlinks, and entity consistency.
  • Extracting facts from the top sources.
  • Citing sources in the answer with links back to your site.

To appear in ChatGPT Search results:

  1. Ensure your site is crawlable (no robots.txt blocks, fast load times).
  2. Use clear, extractable content (headings, short paragraphs, FAQs).

  4. Build backlinks and authority (citations, reviews, local mentions).

Perplexity citation strategy

Perplexity works differently than ChatGPT. It shows sources inline with the answer, making source selection more visible to users.

Perplexity's approach:

Citation frequency and platform spread

The strength of your AI visibility isn't just about appearing in one platform. It's about appearing consistently across multiple platforms.

Citation frequency measures how often your business is mentioned by AI systems across all platforms. A business cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI has higher citation frequency than a business cited by only one platform.

Platform spread measures how many different AI systems cite you. The more platforms that recommend you, the more visible you are.
